Former Stratford High and USC star first baseman Justin Smoak rejoined the Seattle Mariners this week. He was on the bereavement list for the past week as he returned home to cope with the recent death of his father, Keith. Smoak has played in two games this week and has made an immediate impact.
Smoak homered in his first game back Wednesday. Last night he homered again and drove in a career high five runs in a 10-1 win over the Tigers.
“That’s something you want to do, just get back into,” Smoak told the Seattle Post Intelligencer. “Try to take your mind off other things.” Last night’s homer came off Tigers All-Star flame thrower Justin Verlander. The three run shot went an estimated 405 feet.
Somewhere out there Keith Smoak is no doubt smiling.
