There have been a lot of rumors swirling about a potential sponsor for the 2012 Heritage tournament. Golf World published a report Monday indicating a deal was close with RBC. According to the report RBC would sponsor the tournament the next four years.
Heritage tournament director Steve Wilmot told the Hilton Head Island Packet that the report was not true. Wilmot went on to say such reports are only going to make it more difficult for them to find a title sponsor for the tournament.
“It’s hurting us because we’re engaged with so many companies,” Wilmot said. “We’re not in negotiations with any of them.”
There won’t be an announcement “in the near future,” he said.
“Let’s let it play out over the next couple weeks or however long it needs to be,” Wilmot said.
Wilmot said he heard speculation during last week’s tournament that companies ranging from RBC to Island Car Wash were poised to sponsor the tournament.
The speculation was so rampant that several people, including players’ caddies, approached Wilmot to congratulate him and say they heard the tournament had a sponsor.
“My response to them is, ‘If you know something I don’t, please let me know,’ ” Wilmot said.
If Wilmot and his staff are unable to secure a title sponsor the Heritage could be in danger of coming off next year’s PGA schedule.
