Updating a story we posted earlier on Justin Smoak leaving the Mariners to be with his father who was battling the late stages of lung cancer. We have now learned Keith Smoak passed away Tuesday night. He was 54 years old.
Smoak was placed Seattle’s bereavement list Tuesday and Mariners manager Eric Wedge told reporters he will give him as much time as he needs.
That’s something I am so respectful of, Wedge said. “When it comes to family, everything is secondary as far as I’m concerned. When he contacts us and lets us know how things are going, then we’ll go from there.
Smoak is a Goose Creek native and played his high school ball at Stratford. He was traded to Seattle from Texas last season.
Again, our thoughts are with the Smoak family during this difficult time.
