Former USC star first baseman Justin Smoak has left the Seattle Mariners to return to South Carolina to be with his sick father. Keith Smoak is in the final stages of a fight with lung cancer. He was diagnosed last May.
Smoak has been placed on the bereavement list and will be gone at least three to seven days. He was one of the Mariners hottest hitters of late. He’s hitting .291 with two homers and seven RBIs this season.
Smoak is a Goose Creek native and played his high school ball at Stratford. He was traded to Seattle from Texas last season.
Our thoughts are with the Smoak family during this difficult time.
