The 2011 version of the Garnet and Black game is in the books. An announced crowd of 30,000 watched the Garnet team beat the Black team 21-17 at Williams-Brice Stadium. So if you took the Garnet team -3 ½ with your “guy” you are feeling good right now.
As far as spring games go, this was pretty run of the mill. Connor Shaw looked average during his work as the first team quarterback. He completed 17 of his 27 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown. A few of the drives he led stalled inside the ten yard line.
The star of the game was wide receiver DeAngelo Smith. He caught four passes for 118 yards and three touchdowns. Smith, who is behind Alshon Jeffery on the depth chart, has made big plays throughout the spring.
Marcus Lattimore only carried the ball three times for 19 yards in the game. Following the game he talked about the progress he’s made since his record breaking freshman season.
From a defensive standpoint assistant head coach over defense Ellis Johnson says the unit has a long way to go. Johnson doesn’t think the issues in the secondary have been resolved and said the defense lacks the quality depth to be considered a legitimate contender in the SEC.
Spring practice isn’t over for USC. The Gamecocks have two workouts scheduled for next week. Team’s are allowed 15 practices per spring.
