USC began spring practice this afternoon at the Bluff Road “Proving Grounds” without their senior quarterback. Head coach Steve Spurrier told members of the media that quarterback Stephen Garcia has been suspended for the first week of spring practice for a “violation of team rules.” Reserve quarterback Andrew Clifford also was suspended by Spurrier for the same violation.
Sophomore quarterback Connor Shaw took a majority of the snaps, as the Gamecocks worked out in helmets and shorts in the first of fifteen spring practices for the team. The Gamecocks return 13 starters from last year’s squad that captured the first SEC East title in school history.
Coach Spurrier called the first session of the spring “encouraging” and described the day as a “very good first practice.” The Gamecocks return to the practice field Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.
