USC just hasn’t had much luck against Auburn lately. The football team lost twice to Auburn last season and Saturday the cold shooting Gamecock basketball suffered a stunning 79-64 home loss to the Tigers. At least the football team can say it lost twice to the eventual national champions. This Auburn basketball team is easily the worst in the SEC. Saturday was the Tigers first SEC win of the season and just its eighth win overall.
Just to give you an idea of how bad Auburn has been this year, the Tigers have lost at home to UNC-Ashville, Samford, Campbell, Jacksonville and Presbyterian. USC coach Darrin Horn admitted after the game that his team may have overlooked this game. He again cited his team’s youth and inexperience the culprit for the letdown.
One of the big problems for USC was a frigid shooting effort. The Gamecocks were 7 of 33 from three point land and shot just 34 percent from the floor for the game. On the defensive end Auburn pounded them inside and scored 42 points in the paint. The Tigers outrebounded the Gamecocks 47 to 35.
Ramon Galloway led the Gamecocks in scoring with 20 points. He was made six of his 17 shots but only hit two of his eight three point attempts. Sam Muldrow added 14 points and nine rebounds. Bruce Ellington had a quiet game and finished with just nine points.]
Auburn was led in scoring by 6-10 foward Ryan Chubb. He scored 18 points wearing a pair of sneakers he had to borrow from USC. He left his shoes at home so the Gamecocks let him borrow a pair of black and white size 16s for the game.
The loss drops USC to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in the SEC. Auburn is 8-13 and 1-6. The Gamecocks are back in action Tuesday night at LSU.
