OL Brandon Shell (6-8 280) of Goose Creek met with Steve Spurrier, Steve Spurrier, Jr., Jay Graham, and Shawn Elliott this afternoon and has confirmed his commitment to USC. According to this coach, Chuck Reedy, the visit went extremely well and Shell will sign with the Gamecocks on Wednesday morning. Shell is the nephew of NFL Hall of Famer, Art Shell.
Coaches from Clemson and Alabama were at Manning High School for several hours today to meet with DL Phillip Dukes (6-3 280). Dabo Swinney and Dan Brooks of Clemson and Burton Burns and Chris Rumph of Alabama met with Dukes, according to his coach, Robbie Briggs. Both visits went well but Dukes continues to favor USC, who was in yesterday, according to Briggs. Dukes plans to take an official visit to North Carolina this weekend and could have a decision as early as Monday.
DE Jeoffrey Pagan (6-4 250) of Asheville, NC committed to Clemson recently but now could be headed to Georgia instead. According to Paul Strelow of www.247sports.com, the Tigers are no longer pursuing Pagan and were not willing to keep him on board as a soft commit. His high school coach, Danny Wilkins, says he is unsure of Pagan’s plans. “You know about as much as I do,” said Wilkins. “He told me Tuesday he was going to lay low. I just know he is going to sign with someone Wednesday morning.” According to the report by Strelow, Georgia appears to have the inside track for Pagan’s services.
Clemson recruiter Marion Hobby visited at school Thursday with TE Jerrell Adams of Scotts Branch. Clemson and USC remain neck and neck with Adams according to his cousin and adviser Martell Adams. USC coaches visited with him yesterday. Adams is scheduled to visit Alabama this weekend. A decision on that trip will be made tonight or Friday morning. Adams wants to make the trip but his mother does not. If they decide to make the trip, they will leave Friday morning and he will miss his basketball game. If they decide not to go to Alabama, Adams probably will go to Clemson for an unofficial visit and the Tigers’ basketball game on Saturday. He will announce his decision on Signing Day at 10:30 AM.
LB Cedrick Cooper of Lithonia, GA remains committed to USC as of late Wednesday night according to his assistant coach and mentor Lloyd Morrison. Cooper committed to USC and Arkansas before decommitting from the Razorbacks via text and phone call Wednesday. Morrison said he and Cooper talked at length Wednesday night. “He has a better perspective for where things stand for him,” Morrison said. “He’s concerned his actions may have hurt his chances with South Carolina. He’s concerned he has to mend some fences. But Coach Spurrier has told him he will wait for him.” Cooper will take his official visit to Ole Miss this weekend.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney saw one of his top linebacker targets Wednesday when he visited with Tony Steward in St. Augustine, FL. Thursday he will see his other top linebacker target when he visits with Stephone Anthony of Wadesboro, NC. Clemson assistants Dan Brooks and Kevin Steele also will be in on the visit which will also include a meeting with DB Brandon Ellerbe. Anthony has met this week with recruiters from Florida, Virginia Tech and North Carolina. Swinney will be the only head coach to see him this week. All four schools remain in the hunt and its tight between them according to his coach. “He’s got a great poker face,” coach Luke Hyatt said. “I’d say all four are even.” Steward and Ellerbe will take official visits to North Carolina this weekend their coach said. Ellerbe remains committed to the Tar Heels according to Hyatt.
USC coaches weren’t the only ones to see South Pointe DE Jadeveon Clowney Wednesday. The Gamecocks Ellis Johnson and Lorenzo Ward met with him at school and at home. And Clemson recruiter Marion Hobby also saw him. Clowney is scheduled to visit Clemson this weekend and as of Wednesday night that visit was still on. Alabama recruiter Chris Rumph will see Clowney Thursday. LSU has also been trying to get in to see him. Clowney is also sticking with his plan to announce on Valentine’s Day at this point. A source said Wednesday night that “I think he pretty much knows where he wants to go, and I’d give USC a slight edge over Alabama.” Former South Pointe coach Bobby Carroll has maintained for weeks that Clowney is favoring the Gamecocks.
DE Ray Drew of Thomasville, GA met with LSU recruiter Brick Haley Wednesday and that probably will be the final meeting he has with a coach before he announces Friday morning at 10:00 AM. “I want a little time to breathe,” said Drew who has confirmed he has made his decision. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney had planned to make an in home visit but Drew said that is off. Auburn coach Gene Chizik is scheduled to be in tomorrow but Drew doesn’t expect that meeting to take place either. Most observers feel he will announce for Georgia on Friday morning. Drew’s coach confirmed Thursday to the local newspaper that Drew is not picking Clemson.
