QB Tanner McEvoy (6-5 200) of Oradell, NJ committed to USC last night and says it is where he felt comfortable. “I called coach (G.A.) Mangus last night and that was about it,” said McEvoy. “I really enjoyed my visit down there. It felt like the right fit for me.” McEvoy credits Mangus and Steve Spurrier for his decision. “They really did a good job promoting their school,” he said. He now joins WR Damiere Byrd (5-9 160) out of Sicklerville, NJ as a Gamecock commit. “He just texted me about 20 minutes ago and congratulated me,” he said. As for USC’s other Jersey target, DB Sheldon Royster (5-11 190) of Jersey City, NJ, McEvoy is hopeful Royster will join him in Columbia. “We all know each other and it would be great to play together but I don’t know what his plans are,” said McEvoy. Royster is expected to announce this evening.
USC assistant head coach for defensive Ellis Johnson and defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward will meet with South Pointe DE Jadeveon Clowney tonight after Clowney’s basketball practice. That meeting should take place around 7:00 PM. USC defensive line coach Brad Lawing is not available for the meeting due to the death of his father. USC is scheduled to be the only school to see Clowney today. Yesterday LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis and Alabama assistant coach Chris Rumph met with him. Clowney is scheduled to visit Florida State this weekend but two sources said he might not take that visit. In fact, one source said Clowney might take an unofficial visit to USC Saturday. The Gamecocks will stage their biggest recruiting weekend of the campaign this weekend. Clowney currently is scheduled to visit Clemson January 28th. Right now he doesn’t plan to announce a decision until February 14th, his birthday.
DE Roderick Byers of Northwestern plans to visit USC this weekend his coach said Thursday. “He and Gerald Dixon are going to USC Friday,” Jimmy Wallace said. “That’s what he told me earlier in the week.” If Byers does visit USC this weekend, he’ll likely visit Oregon January 28th. USC recruiter Ellis Johnson met with Byers earlier in the week as did a recruiter from Oregon. As for a favorite, Wallace is in the dark. “I have no idea,” he said
DL Leon Mackey of Hinds JC, MS met Thursday with recruiters from Tennessee, Texas Tech and Mississippi State. USC recruiter Lorenzo Ward did not get down to see Mackey today but plans to visit with his family in Delaware early next week. Mackey was thinking about making a decision Friday but it might not be until next week.
Illinois coach Ron Zook was at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School Wednesday to check on his commitment, DB Zeph Grimes, as well as junior DT Martin Aiken whom he has offered. While there, he got a look at junior DL Dave Deleon (6-1 265) and made him a verbal offer. Juniors can’t be officially offered until September. Last season Deleon had 65 tackles with 28 for loss and 8 sacks. USC recruiter Shane Beamer was also by the school today and is very interested in Deleon. He’s already offered Aiken. East Carolina also checked on the players today.
