Two long time USC leans, LB Marcquis Roberts (6-1 205) and TE Rory Anderson (6-5 205) of Powder Springs, GA officially announced commitments to the Gamecocks Wednesday morning. The pair made their decisions known during a ceremony at their school, McCeachern High School. Both made official visits to USC in early November and had been favoring the Gamecocks since then. Roberts also had offers from Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Louisville, Virginia, Ole Miss and West Virginia. He said his decision came down to the Gamecocks and Cincinnati. “I liked the facilities and it’s real close to home,” Roberts said. “I was born there and I’ve got some family right down the street.” Roberts had 86 tackles with 6 sacks last season. He could play linebacker or spur safety at USC. “I play sideline to sideline,” he said. “I like to hit.” Anderson picked the Gamecocks over Tennessee. He also had offers from Purdue, Illinois, Virginia, Louisville, NC State and Mississippi State. “I just felt like it was home, the place for me to fit in with the coaches, players and the academics,” he said. “I felt like it was where I need to be.” Anderson is capable of playing receiver as well as tight end. “I feel like a linebacker can’t cover me,” he said. “I’m a little undersized (for tight end) but that’s to my advantage. Anderson scored 8 touchdowns last season. These to commitments give the Gamecocks 28 for their class.
DE Ray Drew (6-5 250) of Thomasville, GA will take his scheduled official visit to Clemson this weekend. He is currently meeting with Mark Richt of Georgia and will receive a visit from Miami assistant coach Michael Barrow later this afternoon. Drew has already visited Miami, Georgia, LSU, and Auburn. He did not name a favorite.
RB Dominique Cooper (6-1 200) of Darlington will take his official visit to SC State this weekend and says he plans to make a commitment to the Bulldogs. “To tell you the truth, I’m ready,” said Cooper. Cooper was also getting interest from East Carolina but says he will not make that trip. “I’m going to go ahead and go to State,” he said emphatically. Cooper was getting looks from USC and Alabama on the defensive side of the ball but was not interested. “I’m going to play running back,” he said. “You know that.” He also has an offer from North Carolina Central.
QB Jacoby Brissett of West Palm Beach, FL was scheduled for an official visit to USC this coming weekend. But he has a basketball tournament that will run Friday thru Sunday and now plans to visit the Gamecocks January 28th. And according to ESPN760.com in West Palm Beach, Brissett now plans to visit Washington the weekend after signing day. Miami and Florida also have made late runs at Brissett trying to get him in for a visit.
USC recruiter GA Mangus will be in New Jersey Wednesday for one final meeting with his remaining two targets in that state. Mangus plans to visit with QB Tanner McEvoy and DB Sheldon Royster before they announce their decisions on Thursday. McEvoy is down to USC and North Carolina. He is set to reveal his choice shortly after 6:00 PM on Thursday. And Royster is down to USC and Rutgers. He plans to announce his choice Thursday around 9:00 PM.
