Clemson withstood a second half run by Miami to defeat the Hurricanes 79-72 Saturday night at Littlejohn Coliseum. The Tigers evened their ACC record at 1-1 and improved to 12-4 overall with their 7th straight win. It’s the first ACC win for Tigers’ head coach Brad Brownell. Miami fell to 0-2 in the league and 11-5 overall.
Jerai Grant recorded a double-double in leading Clemson with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Demontez Stitt had 17 points for the Tigers and Milton Jennings added 12 off the bench. Miami guard Durand Scott led all scorers with 24 points.
Clemson led 34-33 at halftime and scored the first 12 point of the second half. But Miami used a 10-0 run to make it a 52-51 game with ten minutes to play. Clemson never gave up the lead and was up by seven with 2:10 left.
Miami got back to within three at 74-71 and that set up perhaps the game’s biggest moment. With the shot clock expiring, Andre Young hit a long two pointer to give the Tigers a 76-71 lead with just :37.3 to play, and that all but sealed the victory.
Clemson finished at 50% from the floor and was 19-23 from the line. The Tigers won the rebounding battle 34-27.
Clemson will be back at home Tuesday night against Georgia Tech. Miami plays next at home on January 15th against Boston College.
