Former Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst led Seattle to a 16-6 win over St. Louis Sunday night and in the process helped the 7-9 Seahawks clinch a playoff berth. Seattle is the first team in NFL history to earn a playoff spot with a losing record.
Whitehurst was making just his second career start because Matt Hasselbeck was out with an injury. Whitehurst led the offense to the end zone on its first possession and finished the game 22 of 36 for 192 yards with one touchdown.
If Hasselbeck doesn’t return Whitehurst will make his first career playoff start in Saturday’s Wild Card matchup against the defending Super Bowl Champion Saints. Even though the Seahawks have a losing record, they will be the home team because they are the NFC West champs and the Saints are Wild Card team.
