The USC basketball team added to the heartburn of Gamecock fans over the New Year’s holiday with an 85-70 loss to Boston College Saturday night at the Colonial Life Arena. The loss comes on the heels of the football team’s loss to Florida State in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl the night before and in front actual crowd of about 2,000. The announced attendance was 8,658.
The 15 point margin of defeat is misleading. The game was not that close after the first ten minutes. Trailing by two midway thru the first half, BC went on a 28-9 run to grab control of the game. The Eagles led by 13 at halftime (44-31) and by as much as 29 in the second half.
Bruce Ellington led the Gamecocks with 21 points. Ramon Galloway added 15 points off the bench. Joe Trapani led BC with 23 points. The Eagles pounded the Gamecocks on the boards 44-30 and they hit 13 three pointers.
The loss is USC’s third in its last four games and drops the Gamecocks’ record to 8-4. Boston College improves to 11-3. USC will play SC State in Columbia Tuesday night.
