USC secondary coach Lorenzo Ward announced Monday that Devonte Holloman will start at safety over D.J. Swearinger in Friday’s Chick-fil-A bowl against Florida State. According to Ward the decision was based on performance, notably in the Gamecocks SEC Championship game loss to Auburn.
The USC secondary has had its issues all season. The defensive coaches have maintained the problems have all been the result of lapses of a few different players. Ellis Johnson has defended the secondary and said some of the problems have started up front with the defensive line missing tackles and sacks.
USC and Florida State will play at 7:30 on New Year’s Eve in the Georgia Dome.
