The nation’s second-longest bowl game streak notched another early sellout today when the Chick-fil-A Bowl announced its 14th consecutive sellout 10 days before the game will be played Dec. 31. The Chick-fil-A Bowl’s string of sellouts is the second-longest among all bowls in the country, equal to the Fiesta Bowl and behind only the Rose Bowl.
This year’s ACC-SEC match-up of No. 19 South Carolina and No. 23 Florida State is one of only four non-BCS bowls to host two ranked teams and is also one of only four total bowls – including the BCS – to have two conference or division winners in the game.
“The sellout this year really speaks to the quality of this match-up and the level to which our local fans support this game on an annual basis,” said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Bowl president and CEO. “We’re fortunate to have one of the best match-ups of all the bowls and a local fan base that supports the Chick-fil-A Bowl like no other city in America. This is going to be a feverishly anticipated game.”
Both South Carolina and Florida State purchased their full ticket allotments from the Bowl following their bowl selections Dec. 5 and local and regional buyers purchased the remaining tickets through the Chick-fil-A Bowl office.
In 2010, the Bowl tied a record by having 92% of its ticket holders renew their ticket package purchases. “Seeing that level of ticket renewals in a challenging economy reinforces how strongly the local buyers support us and is truly encouraging for the growth of our bowl,” Stokan said.
The Chick-fil-A Bowl is among the highest-attended non-BCS games in the nation with more than 2.3 million fans having attended the game over the last 42 years. The 2010 Chick-fil-A Bowl will be played Dec. 31 at 7:30 p.m. (EST) and will be nationally televised by ESPN, running unopposed in its time slot. This formula has helped the Chick-fil-A Bowl to become three of the top 10 most-viewed bowl broadcasts in ESPN history.
