USC broke a six game losing streak to Clemson Sunday with a 64-60 win over the Tigers before an announced crowd of 10,177 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia. The Gamecocks have won five in a row and improved to 6-1 while the Tigers dropped their second straight game and are 5-3.
Four Gamecocks scored in double figures led by Bruce Ellington with 14 points. Ellington hit a crucial three pointer with :52 to play. Sam Muldrow added 13 points along with 5 blocks and 5 rebounds.
Andre Young led Clemson with 15 points. Demontez Stitt added 13.
USC led 34-31 at the half shooting nearly 52% in the first half. The Gamecocks led by 8 with 14:07 left but the Tigers got back to within 2 on several occasions. A pair of free throws by Young made it a 62-60 game with :16 to play. But Muldrow hit a pair of free throws with :12 left to seal the Gamecocks’ victory.
The win is USC’s first over Clemson since a 76-61 win at Littlejohn Coliesuem in December 2003. It’s also the Gamecocks’ first win at home over Clemson since February of 2003. And its the Gamecocks first win over an ACC opponent since 2006.
USC is off until facing Wofford at home Saturday night. Clemson opens its ACC schedule next Sunday night at Florida State.
