Here is the first quarter recap of USC-Auburn:
For the third time in it its last four games, USC falls into an early 7-0 hole. Cam Newton found Darvin Adams open behind the USC secondary for a 69 yard gain to the Gamecock 14. Two plays later he hit Onterio McCalebb for a 12 yard score. With 13:20 to play in the quarter, Auburn leads 7-0.
- As they did in those two games where they fell behind, the Gamecocks answered with their own score. The Gamecocks went 75 yards in 7 plays with Stephen Garcia picking apart the Auburn secondary with two strikes to Alshon Jeffery, one to DL Moore, and finally a 25 yard touchdown pass down the middle to Patrick DiMarco. Garcia was 4-4 for 68 yards on the drive. With 9:53 left in the quarter, it’s USC 7-Auburn 7.
- Auburn responds with another touchdown drive on which the Tigers converted two big third downs including a 19 yard run by Newton to the USC 31. Newton capped the drive with a 5 yard power run up the middle. With 5:31 left in the quarter, Auburn leads 14-7.
- Newton and Adams hook up again on Auburn’s next possession after forcing a USC punt. Another pump fake allows Adams to get behind Stephon Gilmore for a 54 yard scoring pass. With 2:09 left in the quarter, Auburn leads 21-7.
- End of quarter…Auburn 21-USC 7. Auburn has 227 yards in the quarter to USC’s 102. Newton was 7-10 for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns.
