Myrtle Beach rallied from nine-point deficits on two occasions in the second-half and captured the Class AAA state title with a 27-23 win over South Pointe at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday night.
Everett Golson’s 20-yard pass to Dallas Goodman with 6:48 remaining in the game proved to be the winning score as the Seahawks captured their second state title in the last three years. The win came one year after losing to Clinton in the state finals.
Golson finished the game with 180 yards passing and three touchdowns, completing 21-of-38 attempts. The 6-1 Notre Dame commitment was nine-of-12 for 81 yards in the fourth quarter.
South Pointe sophomore quarterback Devin Pearson had 126 yards rushing for the Stallions, who ended the season with a 13-2 record.
South Pointe led 16-7 at the half but Myrtle Beach scored on their first possession of the third quarter to close the gap to 16-14.
The Stallions, however, scored with 3:02 left in the third to go back up by nine at 23-14.
Myrtle Beach made it 23-21 with a touchdown run by Daiquone Ford with 8:47 and got the ball back immediately when Pearson was sacked and fumbled, giving the Seahawks possession at the South Pointe 24. Three plays later, Golson hit Goodman for the winning score.
