USC struggled all game long with Delaware State before pulling away to a 74-61 victory Wednesday night at the Colonial Life Arena.
The Gamecocks trailed at the half 37-35 but went on a 13-4 run to open the second half. That gave the Gamecocks a 48-41 lead with 15:00 to play and they would lead the rest of the way.
USC blew the game open with a 17-4 run over a seven minute period late in the second half. That ballooned a 54-48 lead to 71-52 with 3:04 to play. Jhondre Jefferson led that run by scoring ten of his 11 points during that stretch.
Four Gamecocks scored in double figures with Malik Cooke, Lakeem Jackson and Brian Richardson all tallying 12 points. The 12 points are a career high for Richardson.
After a 40% shooting performance in the first half, the Gamecocks warmed up to 66.7% in the second half to finish at 51.8% for the game. They did most of their damage in the paint outscoring the Hornets 48-28.
The Gamecocks are 5-1 and will host Clemson Sunday aftenoon. Tipoff will be at 4:00 PM.
