Abbeville defeated Bamberg-Ehrhardt 42-13 Friday afternoon at Benedict College in Columbia to win the 1A-Division 1 state championship. It’s the Panthers’ first championship since 1996.
Abbeville broke a 7-7 tie in the second quarter and scored 35 unanswered points to turn the game into a rout. The biggest play was a 31 yard touchdown pass from Tyler Boyles to La’Quavas Watt with :03 left in the half. Watt was initially ruled to have run out of bounds but the officials changed the call and determined he had been pushed out of bounds, so the play stood.
Bamberg-Ehrhardt had no answer for the Panthers from that point on. Abbeville rushed for 426 yards led by Ashton Heard’s 230 yards and 2 touchdowns. Bamberg-Ehrhardt was held to 244 total yards.
Both teams finish the season at 13-1.
