Clemson junior defensive end Da’Quan Bowers is one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award. The award is given annually to the top defensive player in college football.
Joining Bowers on the list is Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly, LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson, Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley and Georgia linebacker Justin Houston.
Bowers leads the nation in sacks with 13.5 and is second in tackles for a loss with 22. He is the first Clemson player to be named a finalist for the award since the late Gains Adams in 2006. Bowers was named a finalist for the Lombardi Award Tuesday and is also a candidate for the Walter Camp and Check Bednarik awards.
The Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce the winner on December 6th at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte.
It is going to be tough to beat Auburn’s Fairley, but Bowers has certainly proven he’s one of the best defensive players in college football. If he decides to leave school early he very well could be a top five pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
