USC pulled away from Kentucky Wesleyan in the final five minutes to defeat the Panthers 71-58 in an exhibition game at the Colonial Life Arena Thursday night.
The Gamecocks led by 10 points at halftime but were locked up in a tie game With under six minutes to play. Brian Richardson’s three pointer with 5:30 put USC up 58-55. That was part of an 18-3 run by the Gamecocks over the final six minutes as they pulled away from their D-2 opponent.
Point guard Bruce Ellington led USC with 23 points in his college debute. Lakeem Jackson hadded 16 points and 7 rebounds and Sam Muldrow contributed 14 points and 10 boards.
The Gamecocks open the season a week from Friday at home against Elon. That game will tipoff at 9:00 PM.
