OL Brandon Shell (6-8 280) of Goose Creek made a commitment to USC Monday morning picking the Gamecocks over Clemson, Georgia and Alabama. Shell contacted his coach Chuck Reedy Sunday afternoon and told him of his decision to go with the Gamecocks. “He was just tired of all the phone calls,” Reedy said. “He doesn’t enjoy that. He wants to focus on the season.” Reedy added that it came as no surprise to him that Shell went with the Gamecocks. “He’s favored South Carolina all along,” Reedy said. “I think the fact that it’s close (was a factor). He was there for the Alabama game and I think he believes they can championships with the guys that have stayed in state.” Shell is the great nephew of NFL Hall of Fame offensive lineman Art Shell. And his coach feels he has a bright future. “He’s a number one NFL draft pick,” Reedy said. “He has great feet and great hands and has become more physical. In 20 years of college coaching I never had one like him.” Shell also is a standout on the Goose Creek basketball team. Shell is the 22nd commitment, and 5th offensive lineman commitment, for USC’s 2011 recruiting class.
DB Sheldon Royster (5-11 190) of Jersey City, NJ is on an official visit to USC and will return home tomorrow. “I’ve been here before so I’m familiar with a lot of things,” said Royster. “It’s been good.” Royster says he has met with coaches and players and is having a good time. He had left open the possibility of committing on this visit, or any other visit, if everything was right but says he does not think he will commit to USC before leaving Columbia. Royster will take an official visit to Miami on December 2nd and would like to visit Rutgers as well. He did not name a favorite.
OL Kyle Harris (6-3 283) of Lindale, GA made no visits over the weekend but will be at USC this Saturday night for the Arkansas game for an unofficial visit. This will be his second unofficial visit to USC in the past month. Harris said his parents will make the visit with him. Right now, Harris is primarily focused on USC. “It’s clearly them right now,” Harris said. “If I’m really excited about the game and I can see myself playing there, there’s a good chance (of a commitment).” Harris talked with USC recruiters GA Mangus and Shawn Elliott last Thursday night. Harris is a former Georgia Tech commitment. He’s also been offered by Clemson, Illinois, Louisville, Purdue, Syracuse and Tennessee.
WR Hakeem Flowers (6-3 189) of Wade Hampton made an unofficial visit to USC for the Alabama game and might be back in Columbia Saturday night for the Arkansas game. The Gamecocks have not made a strong push for Flowers though their interest has picked up in the past few weeks. Flowers has taken an official visit to Michigan and will take an unofficial visit to Georgia Tech November 12th. He’s also planning to set official visits with LSU, Oregon and UCLA. He does not have a favorite. This season Flowers has around 40 catches for 900 yards and 9 touchdowns.
DL Maurice Couch (6-3 290) of Garden City JC, KS was an interested TV viewer of the USC-Tennessee game Saturday. Couch has the Gamecocks and Vols tied for the lead right now and kept a close eye on the play of both defensive units. “The game had no real impact (on my decision),” Couch said. “I was focused on both of their defenses.” USC recruiter Brad Lawing talked with Couch Sunday afternoon. “He said I’ve got a chance to do something very special and make an immediate impact when I get there,” Couch said. “He wants me to come in right away and help.” Couch has made his official visit to USC and will try to get for an unofficial visit during his Christmas break. He will make his official visit to Tennessee November 12th. And he’s still considering setting up a visit with Southern Cal.
DL Terry Redden (6-3 285) of Memphis says that he had planned to take an official visit to Clemson but the Tigers are backing off. “I called them to tell them I was really interested,” said Redden. “They told me they had enough commitments at my position. So, unless someone de-commits, they don’t have a spot for me.” He says he will take official visits to Kansas, Ole Miss, and Memphis and that Kansas and Ole Miss are his top two schools.
