The Braves are going to make in interesting here, or so it seems. Atlanta had a chance to clinch the N.L. wild card Friday night with a win and a San Diego loss, but neither of those things happened. Now instead of clinching the Braves wild card lead is down to just one game over the Padres.
The Braves lost 11-5 to the Phillies in a game that essentially ended in the sixth inning when Philly shortstop Jimmy Rollins blasted a two out grand slam to give his team a 7-2 lead. At that point the Braves only hope was for the Giants to beat the Padres in San Francisco. It didn’t happen; the Padres won 6-4.
In addition to pulling the Padres within a game of the wild card lead, it also moves them within two games of the Giants in the N.L. West standings.
The Braves and Phillies will square off again this afternoon at Turner Field. Tommy Hanson (10-11, 3.41) will get the start on the mound for Atlanta. He’ll face seldom used Vance Worley (1-1, 2.25 First pitch is 4:10.
The Padres and Giants will play at 4:05 this afternoon.
