One hit. That is all the Braves had last night. One stinking hit. Phillies starting pitcher Roy Oswalt handcuffed the Braves for seven innings in a 1-0 win that extended Philly’s lead to six games in the N.L. East standings. There are just nine games left in the season. The Phillies magic number to clinch the division is just four games.
The Braves wasted a great pitching performance by Tommy Hanson. He only gave up two hits in his six innings of work. He struck out four and walked three hitters. Jonny Venters gave up the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning.
The Phillies have won ten straight games and are playing like the best team in baseball. The Braves have lost six of their past ten and are playing like a team that won’t be playing much longer. Winning the N.L. East is a pipe dream now. If the Braves are going to make the playoffs, it will be by virtue of the Wild Card. Atlanta still has a half game lead over the Giants in for the final postseason spot.
Atlanta will take tonight off and return to action tomorrow night at Washington. The Nats will be their final road series of the year, they return home next week to play Florida and Philadelphia.
