Shooting guard Damien Leonard of JL Mann, regarded as the state’s best basketball prospect for 2010-11, has announced his commitment to join Darrin Horn and USC.
The 6-5 Leonard had initially planned on announcing his decision next Thursday, but rumors began swirling today that he had already committed to USC. Leonard responded by confirming to Phil Kornblut and other media outlets that he did indeed commit to Darrin Horn and USC last week.
The business program at USC was part of what lured Leonard to the school, along with feeling a connection with the coaches: “The coaching staff is outgoing and I feel like I can trust them with the promises they made me. They don’t really have a shooter and I feel like I can go in and make an impact. I’m comfortable with the players and I feel like we can play together.”
Prior to Purnell bolting Clemson for Depaul, Leonard was thought to be a near lock for the Tigers. After his departure, Leonard began to favor USC, Arizona, and Oklahoma State. He averaged 21 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3 assists per game as a junior last season in Greenville.
