The Braves chances of winning the N.L. East are fading fast. Last night’s 3-1 loss at Philadelphia dropped Atlanta four games behind the Phillies with just 11 games left in the season. The Braves have five more games with Philly, including tonight, but it is looking highly unlikely that they will be able to catch and pass the two time defending National League champions.
Philadelphia is showing why they have played in the World Series in each of the past two years. These guys are known for putting it together in the second half of the season and this year is no different. The Braves led the division for most of the year before the Phillies methodically reeled them in and built the current cushion. The Phillies have won eight straight heading into tonight’s game.
The Wild Card is going to be the ticket for Atlanta. The Braves are still in pretty good shape there with a two game lead on the Padres. To hold on to that lead the Braves will have to figure out a way to beat the Phillies at least a couple of times and hold serve against the lowly Nationals and Marlins in their other two series.
Atlanta hasn’t played great baseball over the past month or so, but I still think this team can make some noise in October. It would be tough ending for Bobby Cox if the Braves miss the postseason.
