A source said Sunday night USC’s new pitching coach as well as the coaching future of Gamecock associate head coach Chad Holbrook likely will be resolved this week.
Gamecock head coach Ray Tanner has been working on a replacement for pitching coach Mark Calvi since the end of last week when Calvi accepted the head coach in waiting position at South Alabama. The source could not disclose names high up on Tanner’s list because of the sensitive nature of the hiring, those most closely involved have a connection with Tanner at USC or with Holbrook. Former USC pitching coach Jerry Meyers, now the head coach at Old Dominion, former Gamecock pitcher Kip Bauknight and Roger Williams, pitching coach at Louisville and the former pitching coach at North Carolina when Holbrook coached there, are three who have been mentioned who meet that criteria.
Holbrook is a candidate for the head coaching job at Winthrop but is in line for a substantial contract upgrade at USC to keep him with the Gamecocks. The source said the title of head coach in waiting has certainly been placed on the table in those contract talks and is something favored by Tanner.
