USC will face UCLA tonight in game one of its best of three series for the College World Series title. This is the Gamecocks fourth appearance in the CWS title game. They lost twice to Arizona State and once to Texas.
This is UCLA’s first trip to the College World Series. UCLA and USC have only met one time on the diamond. The Bruins beat the Gamecocks 10-4 in a tournament in Riverside, California.
UCLA will pitch sophomore right hander Gerrit Cole tonight. Cole is 11-3 with a 3.26 ERA. Cole ranked second in the Pac ten in strikeouts this season, trailing only his teammate Trevor Bauer in that category. He has allowed five hits or less in 13 of his 18 starts this season.
USC coach Ray Tanner still hasn’t named a starter. Blake Cooper, Jay Brown and Tyler Webb are all possibilities. We expect to get word any time on who will toe the rubber tonight for the Gamecocks.
