I have just confirmed that USC coach Ray Tanner has decided to start Blake Cooper in tonight’s College World Series elimination game against Oklahoma. Cooper, a senior right hander from is 12-2 with a 2.92 ERA this season.
This will be Cooper’s second start of the week in Omaha. He pitched five innings in Sunday’s loss against the Sooners. He left after just 67 pitches because of the rain.
Tanner also considered using lefty Tyler Webb (2-2, 2.41) against the Sooners. There is already some second guessing going on, present company included, as to why Webb isn’t getting the nod here. He’s fresh and would seemly present problems for an OU lineup that has a lot of left handed hitter.
Webb is a freshman though and it is understandable why Tanner would want to hand the ball to his best pitcher in an elimination game.
Tonight’s game starts at 7:00 and will be televised on ESPN.
