The Braves have run into a buzz saw in Chicago. Carlos Quentin hit two home runs for the White Sox to lead them to a 4-2 win over Atlanta Wednesday night. That’s their second straight over the Braves and their eight straight win overall.
Meanwhile the Braves are watching their lead in the N.L. East evaporate. The objects in the rearview mirror are closer than they appear. The biggest object right now is the New York Mets. The Mets beat the Tigers last night and have pulled within a half game of the Braves in the East.
The Phillies also won last night and they are just 3 ½ games back in the standings. Florida, fresh off firing its manager and perhaps close to hiring Bobby Valentine, is still within striking distance at 6 ½ back.
Atlanta will try to salvage the final game of the White Sox series this afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field. Derek Lowe (7-5, 4.77 ERA) will face former USC signee Gavin Floyd (2-7, 5.44). First pitch is at 2:05.
