Coastal Carolina coach Gary Gilmore joined us on SportsTalk last night to set the record straight on a number of items.
Gary Gilmore on SportsTalk
First, Gilmore wanted to make it clear he has NOTHING to do with ticket distribution. There are some disgruntled Gamecock fans that have accused the Chantacliers of “boxing them out” of ticket purchases. Gilmore has received some pretty nasty emails from a few unhappy fans. I guess now he knows what it feels like to be a sports talk show host.
Gilmore also made sure to point out there is NOT a feud between Ray Tanner and him. There have been some reports that he and Tanner don’t care much for each other and that is a factor in why these two teams rarely meet. Gilmore said nothing could be further from the truth. He and Tanner have talked this week and the two have a good relationship. Gilmore said he is also cordial with Gamecock assistants Chad Holbrook and Mark Calvi.
The one thing Gilmore and Tanner clearly don’t see eye to eye on is which team is the underdog in this weekend’s Super Regional. Tanner said his team is the underdog by virtue of Coastal’s number four national seed and home field advantage. Gilmore said USC is clearly the favorite because the Gamecocks play in the SEC and have been to Omaha three times this decade.
I love the subplots and story lines heading into this weekend’s matchup. It is going to be a lot of fun this weekend. Game one is at Noon Saturday at BB&T Coastal Field. If you don’t have a ticket, you can of course scalp one or watch it on ESPN-U.
Just don’t send Gary Gilmore a nasty email. It’s not his fault.
