USC is the first team out of the SEC Tournament. The Gamecocks lost to Auburn this afternoon 3-1 in 12 innings. It’s the first time since 1999 the Gamecocks went 0-2 in Hoover.
Trent Mummey’s bases loaded single off Matt Price drove in the winning runs. That hit came two batters after second baseman Scott Wingo mishandled a potential inning ending double play ground ball for an error.
The Gamecocks got the tieing run to the plate in the 12th but as has been the case for them of late, no one could deliver the big hit. The Gamecocks left 12 on base today and 20 in the tournament. They had only 7 hits with Witt Merrifield and Jackie Bradley Jr. combining for five of them.
The Gamecocks only run was Brady Thomas’s homer in the 7th. They got a runner to third in the 8th and had the bases loaded in the 10th but could not scratch.
The Gamecocks wasted another terrified pitching performance as Blake Cooper pitched into the 8th inning allowing just a solo home run and 8 hits. The Gamecocks are now 43-15 and will await the expected word on Sunday that they will host an NCAA Regional next week.
