Junior lefthander Drew Pomerantz showed Wednesday why he was named the SEC’s pitcher of the year. Pomerantz shutout USC over seven innings in a 3-0 victory in the opening round of the SEC Tournament in Hoover, AL. It’s just the second time in his career he’s not allowed a run in an SEC game.
Pomeranz scattered 6 hits and got out of his only real trouble in the 3rd when he struck out Adam Matthews and Christian Walker with runners on the corners. Brett Huber finished up allowing one hit over the final two innings. It’s the first time USC has been shut out in 154 games. A two run homer in the 3rd by #9 hitter Miles Hambin off Nolan Belcher was all the offense Ole Miss needed.
The Gamecocks drop into the losers bracket and will face Auburn tomorrow morning at 10:30 eastern. The Tigers lost to Alabama 7-1. Blake Cooper will start for the Gamecocks against lefthander Grant Dayton who beat the Gamecocks in the regular season.
