Newberry College athletic director Brad Edwards announced Thursday that he has accepted the resignation of head men’s basketball coach Steve DeMeo. DeMeo is expected to accept a position as assistant coach at Hofstra University under new head coach Tim Welsh.
DeMeo recently completed his first season as head coach at Newberry, leading the scarlet and gray to a 10-18 overall record with a 5-11 South Atlantic Conference mark. He was the 23rd head coach in Newberry College history.
DeMeo, who was hired in June 2009, inherited a team that was returning just 2.5 points per game from the 2008-09 season. The team was picked to finish ninth in the SAC preseason poll and finished in a tie for seventh place, earning the eighth seed in the Food Lion SAC Tournament. Ryan Barnes was named to the SAC All-Freshman Team.
DeMeo had previously served as assistant coach at the University of Central Florida after 10 seasons as an assistant at Providence College under Welsh. He spent his last four seasons under Welsh as associate head coach. He also had a stint as an assistant coach at Iona College under Welsh. With the move to Hofstra, DeMeo has an opportunity to work with his longtime mentor and friend in Welsh as well as a chance to once again reside near his family in the New York City area.
