The 5th ranked USC baseball team will head to Georgia this weekend for a three game series with the Bulldogs. Georgia has been was of the bigger disappointments in the SEC this season. They enter the weekend with a 12-25 record and are 3-12 in the SEC. The Gamecocks are 29-8 and 11-4 in the conference.
Ray Tanner previews Georgia
Ray Tanner still considers the Bulldogs a dangerous team. They did start the season ranked in the top 25 before everything fell apart. They also are traditionally very tough to beat at Foley Field. The biggest problem for Georgia though has been the pitching. Their team ERA is 8.48 and outside of Justin Grimm, the staff has been a hot mess. The Dawgs aren’t even sure who they will start on Saturday or Sunday.
Tanner will roll Blake Cooper to the mound on Friday night. Cooper leads the SEC with seven wins (7-0, 2.44) and has been incredible in his role as the team’s number one starter. He has gone head to head with some of the best pitchers in the SEC and the country and held his own each time. If he were about 3 inches taller people would be talking about him as a potential first or second round pick in this summer’s MLB draft.
Blake Cooper talks Georgia
Junior right hander Sam Dyson (3-2, 5.04) will get the ball on Saturday and senior righty Jay Brown (2-0, 3.60) will go on Sunday.
The Gamecocks have won all five of their SEC series this season and have a one game lead on Florida in the East standings.
