The State House of Representatives Wednesday agreed to loan 10 million dollars to the Heritage Golf Tournament next year if officials are not able to land a sponsor. The tournament’s long time sponsor, Verizon, will end its support after next month’s event at Hilton Head Island. By a vote of 69-43, the House voted to take the money from the state’s insurance reserve fund. Lexington representative Nikki Haley was one of those opposed to the idea.

However, Berkeley County Republican Jim Merrill argued that without the funds, the state could possibly lose one of its major tourist attractions.
