Everyone knows that Clemson and USC have two of the best baseball programs in the country year in and year out. What some people might not have noticed is the fact that the Coastal Carolina baseball team is quickly putting itself among the elite teams nationally.
The Chanticleers went a perfect 4-0 at the Baseball at the Beach tournament at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle beach over the weekend. The Chants are 7-1 and are ranked 12th in the country. They will certainly be ranked higher when the new polls come out later this afternoon. This is a program that has been a regular in the postseason the past few years and they’ve even hosted a regional at their place. Chanticleers coach Gary Gilmore has made it clear he thinks this year’s team has what it takes to make a run all the way to Omaha and the College World Series.
Gary Gilmore post Baseball at the Beach interview
Gilmore’s team is backing up those words. This weekend the Chant’s had two wins over 4th ranked U.C. Irvine and also beat NC State on Sunday. It is clear this team is going to be able to play with anyone in the country, even the heavyweights. Actually, if you talk to Gilmore and those close to the Coastal program, they will tell you that the Chanticleers are college baseball heavyweights too.
Coastal Carolina will return to action Friday at home against Toledo.
