Before Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele turned down an offer from new Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley to become the Vols defensive coordinator, Dooley flirted with USC assistant head coach for defense Ellis Johnson. The job was never officially offered to Johnson but might have been had he expressed strong enough interest. As a result of the Tennessee overtures, both Steele and Johnson will likely see their bank accounts enhanced by their current employers. Tennessee reportedly offered Steele a three year contract at 750-thousand dollars per season, about double his current salary.
Johnson likely would have received a similar offer. Both Steele and Johnson have had conversations with their superiors over the past 48 hours about their compensation packages. You can expect announcements in the near future from both schools stating pay raises for both that will put them more in line with what some of the other top defensive coordintors in the country are now receiving.
