Mike Holmes has been kicked off the USC basketball team for repeated violation of team rules. Gamecock basketball coach Darrin Horn announced the move in a statement Friday afternoon.
“We have a standard and basic level of expectations for our team – both staff and players – and Mike was repeatedly unable to reach those expectations, on and off the court,” Horn said. “We will work with Mike to help him continue his education and basketball career.”
Holmes has not played since the Jacksonville game because of an injury he suffered over Thanksgiving weekend in his hometown of Bishopville. Holmes injured his eye socket “horsing around” according to Horn. Obviously that description was suspicious and it was even more puzzling when Holmes was not on the bench for any of the games during his injury.
Horn has kept the Holmes situation close to the vest. In fact he hasn’t even met with the local media in person since the Furman game on December 21st. Normally Horn meets with the media prior to each game. After the Wofford game Horn stated they were keeping Holmes off the bench as a precaution and so that he could focus on academics. However he didn’t travel with the team to Boston College and the semester was over at that point. Holmes has also been spotted at a couple of women’s games since his injury.
Holmes was averaging 11 points and almost five rebounds per game. He is the second starter Horn has lost this season. Dominique Archie is out for the season because of a knee injury. Archie has been on the bench with the team every game since his injury and could apply for a sixth year and return next season. However that has not been determined yet and Archie has not met with the media since his injury.
USC is 8- 4 and faces Baylor Saturday at Noon in Columbia.
