Spurrier is happy that Gamecock fans have bought their total 10,000 ticket allotment for the PapaJohns.com bowl January second in Birmingham. It is another clear sign that the mood around the program is much merrier than it was this time last year when the Gamecocks were getting ready to play Iowa in the Outback Bowl. It is amazing what a win over your arch-rival can do for morale.
The players were probably happy today too. Not only do they get a few days off but they received their bowl swag this morning. I’m told some clothes, a watch, a video camera of some sorts and other knick knacks were in the goodie bag. I’m sure a coupon for a couple of pizzas had to be in there somewhere.
It had to be some pretty good stuff because Spurrier said the esitmated the total value was around 800 bucks. Not bad. That is why college football players love to make a bowl game. It is their one chance to actually get paid as a college player. Well, paid legally anyway. Yeah, I’m talking to you Southern Cal.
The team will return to practice on Monday morning in Columbia. They will leave Tuesday for Birmingham.
