North Carolina turned back a late South Carolina rally to win the 2009 Shrine Bowl in Spartanburg 24-14 to break a two game losing streak in the series. The Tar Heels led 17-0 at halftime but the Sandlappers rallied to get to within 17-14 in the fourth quarter. SC was driving for what would have been the go ahead touchdown but quarterback Dylan Thompson fumbled at the NC 17 yard line and Major Bryant recovered for the Tar Heels. NC then put the game away with Keenan Allen breaking free on a fourth down, 32 yard touchdown run. ‘
The Tar Heels finished with 238 total yards, 197 on the ground. The Sandlappers totaled 203 yards, 136 on the ground. The SC had five turnovers including four lost fumbles. NC lost two fumbles.
Marcus Lattimore led SC with 99 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Thompson was 5-12 for 55 yards and one interception. Kevin Parks led NC with 97 rushing yards. Tyler Brosiuis was 5-11 for 41 yards. Malcolm Howard and Tray Latta had seven tackles each for SC. Kareem Martin and Chris Smith had eight tackles each for NC. Smith also had two sacks, two tackles for loss and a fumble recoveries.
Lattimore and Howard were voted the MVPs for SC. Parks and Smith were voted the MVPs for NC. SC leads the series 40-29-4.
