According to a blog by Joe Person, it looks like USC will be heading to the PapaJohns.com bowl in Birmingham for its bowl game. That game is January 2nd at Legion Field and pits an SEC team against a Big East team.
If this happens, and it likely will, Gamecock fans will be disappointed because they were hoping for a date in the Chick-fil-A bowl in Atlanta or maybe the Music City Bowl in Nashville.
Sadly, politics are the most important factor in bowl selections these days. Remember in Spurrier’s first season when the Gamecocks finished second in the SEC East and had head to head wins against Tennessee and Florida? Well the Gamecocks ended up in Shreveport, LA and the Gators in Tampa, Florida? Why? Because Gator boosters with ties to the Outback Bowl made sure UF didn’t slide out of the Sunshine State.
The same thing is working against USC with the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta. Bulldogs boosters are going to make sure that Georgia gets in that game and the fact the Gamecocks lost the head to head battle doesn’t help their cause.
And I think they should just rename the Music City Bowl the “If Kentucky is bowl eligible we will take them over any SEC team because they travel so well to Nashville” Bowl. I guess that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. The bottom line is the Wildcats will be there for the third time in five years because they buy a lot of tickets. USC beat them head to head and hasn’t played in the bowl game ever. Go figure.
Folks, every year I say it and every year it proves true. The BCS and the Bowl system are a joke and are broken and need to be addressed. Until that happens teams like USC, Clemson, TCU, Utah, Boise State, Auburn and countless others will get the shaft year in and year out.
