He also scored on a one yard run in the fourth quarter. Garcia’s biggest play came on a third down and four scramble in the fourth quarter. He rolled right and hurdled a defender and dove for a first down that kept the drive alive and allowed the Gamecocks to run out the rest of the clock with a two point lead.

The Gamecocks defense managed to do its job despite the fact that at one point they had seven freshman on the field. They knocked Kentucky quarterback Mike Hartline out of the game early in the third quarter when he sprained his knee. With Hartline gone, The Cats relied heavily on receiver Randall Cobb in the “wildcat” formation the rest of the way. Cobb finished with 89 yards rushing and one touchdown and he had 62 yards receiving and one touchdown. His last touchdown pulled the Cats within two points but Cliff Matthews broke up the conversion attempt to preserve the 28-26 lead for the Gamecocks.
