USC broke open a close game with a 21 point third quarter and a shutout defensive effort in the second half in beating Florida Atlantic 38-16 in their home opener Saturday night in Columbia. The Gamecocks led just 17-16 at halftime. But an interception by freshman Stephon Gilmore on the Owls’ first play of the second half led to a three yard Brian Maddox touchdown run, and the Gamecocks were on their way to their second win of the season against one defeat. The Gamecocks rolled up 516 total yards including 287 yards on the ground. For the first time since 2007, the Gamecocks had a 100 yard rusher (Jarvis Giles) and a 100 yard receiver (Tori Gurley) in the same game. Eric Norwood recorded his 26th career sack to tie the school record owned by Andrew Province. The Gamecocks will play host to Ole Miss Thursday night at 7:45 in an ESPN nationally televised game.
