Steve Spurrier says that USC’s athletic department should make a decision on suspended defensive end Clifton Geathers in the next day or two. Geathers has been suspended since his arrest at a downtown Columbia night club a couple of weeks ago. He was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
During the altercation that led up to his arrest Geathers suffered a broken bone above his eye. Even if he is reinstated to the football team in the next couple of days that injury could keep him on the sideline for another week or two. He has not practiced in over a week and it is doubtful he will be ready for NC State. It appears the best case scenario is for Geathers to return for the Georgia game on September 12th. This is, of course, assuming the athletic department allows Geathers to return, which is expected.
Geathers is 6-8 and 281 pounds and has played in 24 of the Gamecocks past 25 games. He was expected to play a big role on this year’s defense. He’s been replaced in the lineup by redshirt freshman Devin Taylor.
