The USC baseball team couldn’t be playing much better as it gets set for the SEC Tournament play this week in Hoover, Alabama. Ray Tanner’s team finished its final nine SEC games with a n 8-1 record. That includes sweeps over Vanderbilt and a Georgia team that may be struggling now, but at one time was the top ranked team in the country.

There is no doubt that Tanner has this team playing its best baseball of the season. And it couldn’t be happening at a better time of the year. Remember that last year’s team, loaded with two first round draft picks in the lineup, didn’t clinch an SEC tournament bid until the final at-bat of the final game of its season. It is hard to argue that, even though this year’s team doesn’t have the star power of last year’s, it certainly seems to be a more complete team top to bottom.
So now it is on to Hoover to open SEC tournament play. The Gamecocks are the #5 seed. They play #4 seed Alabama at 9:30 Wednesday night. Here is the complete SEC Tournament bracket. It is an interesting draw for the Gamecocks. They didn’t face Bama this year in the regular season. It will be a tough game because lots of Tide fans always make the short trip to Hoover. But with the way Carolina has played the past few weeks I doubt they are afraid of anyone in the tournament at this point.
