USC played host to defensive end target Kameryn Fountain (6-6 237) of Atlanta for an unofficial visit Saturday. The visit extended into Sunday morning before Fountain headed back to Atlanta. It was his third visit with the Gamecocks this recruiting season. He also visited in April and was back for a game in October.
“It was a good visit. They were cool out there, definitely a good vibe out there,” Fountain said. “They had some errors, but they came together as a team and picked it up. That’s how they pulled away with the win.”
USC defensive ends coach Sterling Lucas has been working Fountain for the Gamecocks. He also caught up with head coach Shane Beamer for a conversation.
“Me and coach Beamer, we always just don’t talk about football, we talk about stuff outside of football,” Fountain said. “He’s a good coach and a good person. He was just like; we need some edge rushers. We need some sacks; we need some edge rushers.”
Fountain has been committed to Southern Cal since last summer but has continued go through the recruiting process. He also visited Auburn for a game in September. Fountain never decommitted from Southern Cal, but in recent interviews, he indicated that was on the table, with a flip to South Carolina possible. However, Sunday night Fountain ended all of that kind of talk.
“I’m going to stick with Southern California,” Fountain said. “Most definitely, got to. I’m a man of my word, and I believe that the coaches can take me far. I feel like I put my trust in them. I put my trust in coach (Roy) Manning and coach (Lincoln) Riley. I feel like those are some good coaches. In like a year, we’re going to be back as the top program.”
That statement brings up the obvious question about whether something happened on his visit to Columbia that turned him off to the Gamecocks.
“Nothing happened. Nothing happened,” Fountain said. “It’s still a good skill and all, I just feel like my coaches that I committed to I feel locked into. I feel good about my commitment. That’s why I never flipped. I’ve been talking to their (Southern Cal) coaches lately. The plan is to sign with the Trojans.”
With that said, Fountain also said he won’t’ be returning for an official visit to USC this coming weekend, nor does he plan to take any other visits.
