Palmetto Pigskin Tour marches through The Citadel (AUDIO)

There’s an abundance of excitement surrounding The Citadel football team as the Bulldogs prepare for their first season under head coach Maurice Drayton. The former Bulldog defensive back and defensive coordinator returned to his hometown of Charleston after seven seasons in the NFL.

He’s applying much of what he learned in the pro league to his new team, and that includes how they practice. Drayton said one thing he learned from the NFL is you can’t win with a bunch of injured players. Thus, camp practices have been devoid of heavy physicality. As a result, Drayton believes he’ll have a healthy team ready to go against Georgia Southern in the season opener.

Drayton plans to continue the triple option offense with the Bulldogs. Defensively, new coordinator Raleigh Jackson has changed things from a three man front to a four man look.

We made our tour stop in Charleston Friday morning to record our interviews with Drayton and his players. Due to nighttime practices, a live show from the campus wasn’t possible this year.
