Following an up-and-down 2022 campaign, Syracuse will be in search of consistency in 2023. The Orange raced out to a 6-0 start in 2022 with victories over Louisville, Virginia and NC State. But a midseason loss at Clemson and a rash of injuries derailed the dream season as Syracuse limped down the stretch and finished 7-6.
The hopes are high in upstate New York, however, as 14 starters return, including quarterback Garrett Shrader (65%, 2,640 yards, 17 TDs, 7 int.) and versatile TE Oronde Gadsden II (61 catches, 969 yards). Jason Beck will take over as offensive coordinator after serving as the quarterbacks coach last season. Beck had previously worked wonders with the Virginia quarterbacks during the successful tenure of Bronco Mendenhall. The pass defense figures to improve also as four starters return to the defensive backfield.
The Orange will open Dino Babers’ eighth season against Colgate, Western Michigan, Army and Purdue before entering conference play against Clemson Sept. 30.
